One Writer Says the Internet No Longer Feels Worth Reading. The Data Is More Complicated

Tao Bojlén blames monetized attention and LLM output for making human thought harder to find. Usage and participation data complicate that diagnosis, while AI-content estimates remain classifier-dependent.

Software engineer Tao Bojlén does not claim to have measured the internet. He says he no longer enjoys it.

In an essay published August 17, 2026, Bojlén recalls message boards, blogs, social networks and chatrooms as places where he made friends, found jobs and sharpened his beliefs. He argues that monetized attention, low-quality material and large-language-model output have made thoughtful human communication harder to find.

His image comes from the game Disco Elysium: inhabited "isolas" surrounded by an expanding, information-degrading "pale." He still finds worthwhile people and writing online. His complaint is about the work required to locate them, and the uncertainty over whether communication reflects what another person thinks.

That is one person's account, not evidence that the public has abandoned the internet or that any particular Hacker News post was generated by a model. Public data instead describes heavy use, less active participation in some surveys and a growing but difficult-to-measure supply of synthetic media.

Use is not enjoyment

Ofcom's Online Nation 2025 report says UK adults averaged four hours 30 minutes a day online in May 2025 on personal smartphones, tablets and computers, excluding work use and TV sets. That was ten minutes more than in 2024. Alphabet- and Meta-owned services accounted for 51% of this measured time.

In the United States, Pew Research Center's 2025 survey found that YouTube was the most widely used platform it asked about, with 84% of adults saying they ever used it. Across Pew's multi-year series, reported use had grown for TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp and Reddit. The Center surveyed 5,022 U.S. adults from February 5 to June 18, 2025 using address-based sampling and web, mail and phone responses.

Neither source measures enjoyment. Time online can include work-like obligations, habit or limited alternatives, while reported platform use says little about satisfaction or social connection.

Ofcom's Adults' Media Use and Attitudes release, published in April 2026, found that 89% of UK adult internet users used at least one social platform. Among adult social-media users, the share who actively posted, shared or commented fell from 61% in 2024 to 49% in 2025. Among adult internet users, the share who explored new websites fell from 70% to 56%.

Those comparisons do not measure lost joy or show that AI caused either decline. They do show that high reach can coexist with more passive reported behavior. That is compatible with Bojlén's experience without proving his explanation.

Concern and benefit coexist

Ofcom's June 2025 Online Experiences Tracker found that 98% of UK adult internet users were concerned about at least one prompted potential harm. In a separate attitudes item reported in the same publication, 65% of all adults said the personal benefits of going online outweighed the risks, while 7% said the risks outweighed the benefits. Broad prompted concern therefore did not amount to broad rejection.

Regulators treat feed design as more than taste. In October 2024, the European Commission requested information from YouTube, Snapchat and TikTok about recommender-system parameters and possible roles in risks involving elections, civic discourse, minors, addictive behavior and content rabbit holes. A request for information establishes scrutiny under the Digital Services Act, not a finding that a platform caused those harms.

A 2024 Scientific Reports study found that discussion of news events on X circulated and faded faster, and was more negative and outraged, than discussion in the radio corpora it studied. The comparison does not establish that short posts or videos make users lazy. A 2024 Communications Psychology Perspective reviewed evidence connecting digital-media use and boredom, described digital media as one possible contributor rather than the sole cause, and called for additional empirical study of proposed mechanisms.

Classifiers cannot count the whole internet

Bojlén says too many Hacker News front-page stories are "clearly written by an LLM." HashSparks cannot verify that judgment. The essay provides no sampled posts, and prose style alone cannot establish an individual article's provenance.

At population scale, researchers are attempting estimates. A 2026 preprint by Jonas Dolezal and colleagues used an Internet Archive-derived sample and an AI-text detector. The authors report that by mid-2025 roughly 35% of newly published websites in their sample were classified as AI-generated or AI-assisted. They found a negative correlation between the detected rate and semantic diversity, but no statistically significant evidence that the increase reduced factual accuracy or stylistic diversity.

That 35% is a preprint's classifier estimate over sampled websites, not a census of the web, pages or words. Classification error, archive coverage and the grouping of generated with assisted text limit what it can show. Correlation also does not establish that AI caused changes in semantic diversity.

A separate 2025 preprint about political images on X analyzed a keyword-curated dataset from July through September 2024 related to the U.S. presidential election. GPT-4o returned valid classifications for about 90.5% of roughly 2.46 million processed images and labelled about 12% of validly processed shared images as AI-generated. The researchers validated the detector on constructed and in-the-wild samples, but wrote that accuracy on real-world social-media images remained uncertain; their estimate is therefore not a platform-wide census.

These studies use different samples, media and detectors. Neither can determine whether a particular polished paragraph was generated by a model.

The narrower conclusion

Bojlén's distinctive concern is social: effortless prose may weaken writing's function as evidence that someone considered a thought worth expressing. That is cultural analysis, not a detector result. Disclosure can clarify provenance, but it cannot guarantee care, originality or truth; human authorship never guaranteed those qualities either.

The available evidence supports a narrower conclusion than "the internet is over." A heavily used network can become less rewarding for some people to contribute to. Synthetic media can be widespread in bounded samples without making every polished paragraph fake. Faster attention cycles do not determine how every user thinks. Whether stronger provenance, user-controlled recommendations or smaller communities would make worthwhile work easier to find remains an open question.
