Inside a Casio VX-4 BBS and Its Raspberry Pi Network Bridge

An Irish radio amateur says the menu and message handling run in BASIC on a vintage pocket computer. A Pi Zero W supplies the network bridge and archive; unreleased code leaves Telnet compliance unproved.

A four-line pocket computer from the calculator aisle has become the centre of a miniature online-community experiment—but it does not reach the internet alone.

On August 16, Irish amateur-radio blogger EI3LH documented a bulletin board system whose login, four-option menu and message handling, the builder says, run as a BASIC program on a Casio VX-4. The post includes photographs and a video presented as a remote session that reads and writes short messages. HashSparks did not connect to the system, inspect the hardware or review its software; the demonstrations and architecture are first-party evidence.

The proof of concept is deliberately tiny. EI3LH says a caller enters an amateur-radio callsign and can read messages, leave a message of no more than 60 characters, view an about screen or disconnect. The builder reports that it accepts one connection at a time and uses a 4,800-baud serial setting, selected instead of 9,600 baud for reliability.

What the calculator does—and what the Pi does

According to EI3LH, the VX-4 runs the BASIC application, stores current messages and decides what callers see. Its serial interface exchanges characters with a Raspberry Pi Zero W.

The Pi supplies the network path the calculator lacks. The post says it uses Tailscale Funnel, signals a new connection to the calculator and copies messages into a text-file archive. EI3LH describes the archive as a safeguard and a way to reclaim scarce calculator storage. An optional Adafruit OLED on the Pi displays status, though the builder says that feature remains unreliable.

The disclosed logical path is therefore:

remote client → Tailscale Funnel → Pi Zero W network/serial bridge → FTDI serial connection → Casio VX-4 BASIC program

On the builder's account, the calculator supplies the live login, menu and message application, while the Pi supplies essential remote access and supporting services. That makes the complete remotely reachable service a two-computer system, not a calculator with its own TCP/IP stack. The public post does not provide enough connector and adapter detail to reconstruct the exact physical cable chain.

Tailscale's Funnel documentation says Funnel can expose a raw TCP forwarder on ports 443, 8443 or 10000. That makes an internet-to-local-TCP stage technically plausible, but it does not document this project's local listener, bridge program, Funnel command or serial handoff.

The Telnet label remains unverified

A text session over TCP is not automatically Telnet. RFC 854 defines Telnet as a TCP stream with a Network Virtual Terminal representation and interspersed Telnet control information. An implementation must correctly handle the Interpret as Command byte, escape it in data, and respond properly if option commands such as DO, DON'T, WILL and WON'T arrive. Options may remain disabled; an active negotiation exchange need not occur in every session.

EI3LH calls the service a “genuine, true telnet BBS” and says callers use Telnet software. But the post does not identify which component handles Telnet commands, publish the bridge or show a protocol trace or deliberate compliance test. Some Telnet clients can appear to work with a plain TCP character socket when little negotiation occurs. The public evidence therefore supports the narrower description a calculator-hosted text BBS, as described by its builder, reached through a TCP/serial bridge. It does not establish RFC 854 compliance.

The one-caller design and combination of terminal software, serial transport and host application echo familiar BBS arrangements, even though Tailscale and a cellular demonstration replace a dial-up path.

A pocket computer in calculator clothing

The VX-4 is more precisely a programmable pocket computer with scientific-calculator functions. An independently maintained Casio JIS BASIC reference places it in an HD61700-based family and lists a 32-column, four-line physical display, BASIC, C and CASL support, and RS-232C. It reports about 4,891 bytes free for programs and data in the base configuration after system overhead—not 8 KB available to the BBS.

EI3LH says the demonstrated unit contains an optional 32 KB RP-33 memory card but that the program was designed to fit the baseline machine. No program listing, byte count, free-memory display or unexpanded run was public at the reporting cutoff, so base-model fit remains the builder's claim.

The project post calls the FX-870P the same device with more RAM. The independent reference groups the FX-870P and VX-4 as the same hardware with different branding while listing different base free-memory figures: about 17,179 bytes and 4,891 bytes respectively.

A demo, not yet a reproducible release

The builder calls the BBS an alpha and says a release is planned after work on the banner and about page, with possible additional features or a C version. At the August 16 verification cutoff, the project post did not link calculator source, Pi bridge code, configuration, a bill of materials or a licence, and public searches did not locate them. EI3LH's discoverable jamoncito-fx repository is a separate radio-contact logger.

Without those materials, outsiders cannot yet check baseline memory use, the division of message state, disconnect handling or Telnet-command processing. Nor can the public record establish a “world's first.” A December 2024 HP 48 project used a calculator as a terminal for remote BBSes through a computer. That differs from EI3LH's claimed host architecture, but it illustrates why priority depends on a precise category and an exhaustive historical search.

For now, the defensible achievement is specific: EI3LH has published a demonstration of a compact BBS interface said to execute on a vintage Casio, retain messages there and use a modern single-board computer for the network path and archive. A source release would make the architecture, memory claim and protocol behavior independently testable.
