OpenAI launches ChatGPT for Teens; CodeAI programmes come next

The 13–17 experience adds default content protections, study nudges and no ads. Age prediction is still rolling out, while most of the CodeAI partnership is a one-year plan without dates or enrolment details.

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teens, but the name can give the wrong impression of what arrived on August 18. OpenAI presents it as an experience switched on inside an eligible ChatGPT account, not as a separate app or newly priced subscription tier. It applies when a person states that they are 13 to 17 or OpenAI's systems estimate that they are under 18.

The company says the experience adds stricter handling of sensitive content, new study nudges and design choices intended to discourage emotional dependence. An Associated Press launch report independently confirms that the teen version launched Tuesday.

The same-day partnership announcement with CodeAI is part of this story, not a second event. OpenAI's product page embeds the partnership, while the partnership page says it coincides with the launch. Yet their timelines are different: the product is launching now; most of the education programmes are commitments for the next year.

Who gets the teen experience

OpenAI's terms set 13 as the minimum age, or the higher local age required to consent, and require people under 18 to have permission from a parent or legal guardian. ChatGPT remains not intended for children under 13.

For eligible users, OpenAI says placement is automatic. It can use the age associated with an account, a verified age or an age-prediction system. That prediction system looks at account and behavioural signals including general conversation topics, times of use, usage patterns and how long an account has existed. It is an estimate, not documentary proof.

The rollout is not as geographically precise as a global-launch headline would suggest. OpenAI's age-prediction Help Center page says prediction is rolling out globally, with the EU due in the coming weeks to account for regional requirements. Neither launch page gives a country-by-country product list, plan eligibility, a separate price or a date by which every existing teen account will be migrated.

Adults placed into the teen experience by mistake can verify their age through Persona. Depending on country, Persona may request a live selfie, government ID or both. OpenAI says Persona deletes the uploaded material within seven days and sends OpenAI only age-related information, not the ID or selfie itself. Those are OpenAI's descriptions of the data flow; this reporting did not independently audit it.

Protections are defaults, not proof

OpenAI says ChatGPT for Teens handles self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities and explicit sexual or graphic material more restrictively. Its documentation also names graphic violence, viral challenges, sexual or romantic roleplay, unhealthy dieting and extreme beauty content as areas where exposure may be reduced. Accounts in the teen experience will not be shown ads, according to the age-prediction Help page.

The intended relationship boundary is unusually explicit. OpenAI says its under-18 rules direct ChatGPT not to use romantic language, encourage emotional dependence or imply that it has feelings or consciousness. It has also added more frequent break reminders, reminders that the user is talking to AI, warnings before a teen uploads a potentially sensitive image and teen-specific onboarding. These describe intended behaviour, not a guarantee in every chat.

These are product-design and safety claims from OpenAI. No independent hands-on evaluation of the newly launched experience was available by HashSparks' verification cutoff. The distinction matters because earlier testing found meaningful failures in the product that preceded it. AP's report recounts 2025 research in which testers posing as vulnerable 13-year-olds elicited detailed harmful material even when ChatGPT also supplied warnings. That test cannot tell us how the new teen experience performs; it explains why post-launch testing is necessary.

OpenAI has begun publishing its own under-18 evaluations. Its August GPT-5.6 system card says difficult teen-safety tests covered self-harm, eating disorders, age-restricted goods, graphic violence and sexual content. OpenAI reports performance broadly comparable with the GPT-5.5 versions it tested, without statistically significant differences, and cautions that the results are not estimates of failure rates in normal use. A separate dynamic benchmark in the same card found a statistically significant self-harm regression against GPT-5.5 Instant; OpenAI says it did not observe an increase in undesirable self-harm responses during online experimentation and will keep monitoring. These tests evaluate model layers, not the complete product, age-prediction system or human-review process.

Learning without the quick answer

The teen experience brings together Study Mode, quizzes and Learning Visualizations with two newly named controls. “Responsible homework reminders” are meant to recognise when a teen is trying to shortcut an assignment and redirect them into step-by-step work. Study Hours let a teen or linked parent schedule times when eligible new chats start in Study Mode.

Study Hours are not Quiet Hours. The first changes how a new conversation begins; the second blocks access during scheduled periods. Both are off by default. Study Mode itself is also off by default for a newly linked account unless a teen or parent enables it or schedules Study Hours.

OpenAI says Study Mode uses guiding questions, scaffolding and knowledge checks, and points to research supporting active retrieval and self-explanation. That learning-science record does not independently establish that this product improves grades or retention. OpenAI refers to an early internal evaluation as promising, but the launch materials give no independent trial, production effect size or post-launch classroom outcome. The responsible homework reminder also arrives without published detection accuracy or false-positive rates.

What parents can—and cannot—see

The default teen protections do not depend on a parent linking an account. The extra parental controls do. A parent or teen sends an invitation and the other accepts; either can later unlink. One parent can connect to multiple teens, while a teen can connect to one parent at a time.

On a linked account, the parent can manage sensitive-content reduction, memory, voice, image generation, Study Mode, Study Hours, Quiet Hours and some ChatGPT Work capabilities. The current parental-controls documentation says sensitive-content reduction is enabled by default, while Study Mode, Study Hours and Quiet Hours are disabled. Voice and image generation are enabled. Memory is enabled where available, with possible regional exceptions.

The same page says “Improve the model for everyone” is enabled by default, meaning a linked teen's conversations can be used to improve OpenAI's models unless a parent turns it off. This detail deserves attention because the teen launch does not create a separate default ban on model training. OpenAI's consumer data documentation says ChatGPT conversations may be used for training unless the account opts out.

Turning training off does not erase chat history. Chats remain saved until deleted. OpenAI says deleted chats are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, with exceptions for material already deidentified and disassociated or retained for security or legal obligations. Temporary Chats are not used for training and are deleted on a roughly 30-day schedule, though they may be reviewed for abuse. Files saved to Library must be deleted separately from the chat that introduced them.

Linking does not let a parent read conversations, history or real-time activity. OpenAI says safety notifications may be sent after trained reviewers identify a serious self-harm concern or when an account is deactivated over violence-related conversations. The alert can describe the type of concern and account action, but does not include a transcript. OpenAI also says the system is not real-time monitoring and may miss problems.

The launch page says eating-disorder notifications are being added. The live Help Center list did not yet include that category at the verification cutoff, so it is an announced addition rather than a documented current capability.

The CodeAI work comes next

CodeAI, the nonprofit previously known as Code.org, is not starting from zero. Its existing AI Foundations course is free, aimed at grades 9–12 and available in full-year, semester and individual-unit formats. It combines AI literacy with data, cybersecurity, programming and web development.

Over the next year, OpenAI and CodeAI say they will create a joint advisory council, use Hour of AI to reach millions of students, run a first Builders Challenge for high-school students, involve OpenAI experts in further development of AI Foundations and offer career talks with OpenAI staff.

The announcement gives none of the operational details that would turn those commitments into programmes a student can join today. It names no council members, challenge date, application route, eligible country, participant capacity, budget, rules or selection process. “National stage” is not defined. OpenAI's role in AI Foundations is consultation, not ownership of the course or automatic provision of ChatGPT for Teens to every student taking it.

One statistic in the announcement illustrates the need to read the source behind a partnership claim. OpenAI says 75% of high-school students believe understanding AI will become more important for their futures. CodeAI's underlying release says YouGov surveyed a nationally representative sample of 666 US high-school students online between September 2025 and February 2026, and that 75% thought the importance of AI fluency would increase more than other subjects. It is a US, CodeAI-sponsored survey—not a global verdict or an evaluation of this partnership.

A broader 2026 Common Sense Media survey shows why both product safeguards and literacy matter. In its weighted US sample of 1,204 children, 89% of 13–15-year-olds and 92% of 16–17-year-olds said they had used or interacted with AI. Yet 44% of respondents said a parent had not talked with them about AI safety, and only 51% said a school or teacher had discussed how to judge whether AI information was accurate.

OpenAI has put a clearer boundary around how ChatGPT should treat teenagers and attached learning features to that boundary. That is a concrete launch. Whether the safeguards work under pressure, how quickly age prediction reaches every region and which students can join the CodeAI initiatives are still open questions.
