An AirPods-style demo points to Visual Intelligence — with a provenance gap

A 13-second clip and a separate B790 system prompt point toward head-worn visual input. Neither confirms a shipping product, and Apple’s public release list does not show the macOS 26.7 release candidate cited as the video’s source.

A 13-second video posted by MacRumors analyst Aaron Perris depicts a man wearing a white stem-style earbud, lifting a book from a counter and holding its cover near head height. The first-person-style shot changes from blur to sharp focus and back again. That is what the public file establishes.

Perris said on X on Aug. 18 that the video shows “AirPods with Cameras” using Visual Intelligence and that the file came from a macOS 26.7 release candidate. But the post did not include the original asset path, filename, metadata, checksum or macOS build number. Apple’s public developer release list for Aug. 17 shows macOS 27.0 beta 6, build 26A5416b, and macOS 26.6.2, build 25G83. It does not list a macOS 26.7 RC.

That discrepancy does not prove the file is fabricated. It could have come from an internal or otherwise unlisted build. It does mean the most important provenance claim cannot be reproduced independently, and it is too early to call the clip confirmation of a product or launch.

What is visible — and what is not

HashSparks independently retrieved two X-hosted versions of the clip. X reports a 13.146-second duration. The inspected 2160-by-3840 H.264 rendition has SHA-256 94382250cfeb0032ea371b560ae3efb99e89493b8ccbf29d0de67390dba43538; a 1080-by-1920 rendition has SHA-256 c2626f1f82f34eabf3d2248540a0b0eb45c1c386c9f445627854515b0b23b590. Those dimensions, hashes and container metadata describe X's transcodes, not the unreleased source asset that Perris says came from macOS.

The clip opens on a defocused view of a loft-like kitchen and living space. The image sharpens. A man in a black shirt enters the foreground wearing a white earbud with a stem, picks up a book and holds its cover up. At full resolution, the cover reads Could Should Might Don't: How We Think About the Future by Nick Foster. The picture becomes blurred again before the scene returns to the counter.

A dark oblong detail is visible on the earbud. The footage is not enough to identify it as a lens rather than a vent, microphone opening or another component. There is no unambiguous camera lens or indicator light, no Siri or Visual Intelligence interface, and no displayed recognition result. The first-person framing and focus change suggest a story in which a head-worn device sees the book, but a staged demo can imply a function without proving where an image was captured or processed.

MacRumors reported the narration as: “With Visual Intelligence, your world becomes savable. See something you like? Just ask me to save it for later.” The X rendition contains an audio track, but HashSparks did not independently produce a speech transcript. MacRumors also reported an AirPods setup warning about keeping the earbuds uncovered. The article supplies neither a source-asset path nor a screenshot for that warning, so both details remain attributed to MacRumors.

The stronger code clue is older and separate

On July 3, designer and developer Sam Henri Gold posted a screenshot and a MobileAsset path ending in PCC/system_prompt_metadata/system_prompt.json. The 2104-by-1724 screenshot has SHA-256 5e7c19993cf10b5dea80be2215782754d7cd36fe652fbad70839ea84906bfc29. 9to5Mac's Michael Burkhardt reported the material as coming from iOS 27 beta 2.

The visible system-prompt template has a branch for image_input_configuration == "b790". It describes a text query accompanied by two images from cameras on either side of the user's head, with left and right views of the same scene. It also tells the system to request another capture when B790 images are blurry, dark or occluded.

That screenshot supports the existence of a B790 software configuration for paired, head-mounted image inputs. It does not name AirPods or glasses. Gold suggested smart glasses; Burkhardt argued that the codename was more likely connected to a rumored camera-earbud project. The later video makes that inference more plausible, but it remains an inference.

MacRumors separately reported finding the diagnostic string B790 start image stream failed for left bud. If accurate, “left bud” is a more direct link to earbuds than Gold's prompt. MacRumors did not publish the string's file path or a screenshot, so HashSparks could not reproduce it and treats it as MacRumors' finding rather than a verified code extraction.

What Apple has actually announced

Apple's current AirPods Pro 3 specifications list microphones, a skin-detect sensor, accelerometers, a heart-rate sensor and touch control. They do not list a camera. Apple's documentation for using Visual Intelligence on physical surroundings directs users to an iPhone camera through Camera Control or alternative iPhone controls.

Current supported AirPods can also act as a remote for an iPhone or iPad camera. That existing “camera remote” feature should not be confused with a camera inside an earbud. Apple's June 2026 Siri announcement describes using Siri across AirPods, but its announced visual-input mode uses the iPhone Camera app. None of these Apple materials announces the hardware depicted by rumor coverage.

Independent reporting does not settle a roadmap. MacRumors summaries of Bloomberg reporting have described B798 and B790 as separate camera-earbud projects with different possible timing, while a lower-confidence leaker claimed development had been suspended. On Aug. 17, 9to5Mac's Marcus Mendes predicted a September announcement from the reported provenance; that is an inference, not an Apple commitment. This story makes no prediction about timing, product name, camera type, indicator design or a smart-glasses roadmap.

The same restraint applies to privacy. TechCrunch repeated a report that an indicator would light while data was sent to the cloud, but the inspected video, Gold screenshot and cited Apple materials do not establish either behavior. They also do not establish where images would be processed or stored, whether they would be retained or used for training, or how capture would be activated or signalled to people nearby. Those are central questions for any head-worn visual system, but they remain questions — not features that can be inferred from this demo.
